Before we get into the Itinerary, here are a few things to know:
GETTING AROUND SWITZERLAND

Swiss Travel Pass - We HIGHLY recommend this pass for this itinerary! While you can purchase individual train and public transit tickets in Switzerland, the cost can add up quickly. Switzerland offers travel pass options that cover trains and public transit, eliminating the need to purchase individual tickets.
Guidance on travel passes will depend on what regions of the country you'll be visiting, what activities you want to do, and how long you'll be in each place!
We've used the Swiss Travel Pass for our trips to Switzerland! You'll want this pass if you plan to visit multiple regions of the country on your trip. You can purchase a 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15-day pass, which will allow you to hop on trains between regions without having to book tickets in advance (aside from a few trains, which require pre-booked seats).
With this pass, you'll have access to:
Public transit
Boats
Some premium cableways and funiculars (Stoos, Rigi, Stanserhorn)
Over 500 museums
A percentage off the larger mountain excursions and cableways like Pilatus, Jungfrau and Harder Kulm
Family pass options (If you're traveling with a child between the ages of 6-up to their 16th birthday, you can request a family card so your child rides free when you're with them)
FOOD
Not gonna lie—we didn’t eat out much in Switzerland. Instead, we channeled our inner Swiss and made most of our meals right at our accommodations. For hikes, we packed our lunches and enjoyed them with a view!
Turns out, it’s pretty normal for locals to skip the restaurants and cook at home—so when in Switzerland, do as the Swiss do!
We did most of our grocery shopping at Coop because it was usually the most convenient for us, but Migros and Aldi are often cheaper!
CURRENCY
Throughout Switzerland, the Swiss Franc (CHF) is used, though some businesses accept euros. We recommend using card or contactless payment.
There were no instances where we had to use cash! Even the self-service stalls (where you can buy fresh milk, eggs, and yogurt) in some of the smaller towns had card readers.
LANGUAGE
Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Multilingualism is a huge aspect of Switzerland's identity, with most Swiss speaking multiple languages. German is the most widely used language in the country.
As a tourist, it might sound overwhelming, but rest assured - most people speak English! A simple "Hallo" will be just fine for a greeting!
In the regions visited in this guide, you will hear primarily German. You'll start hearing more French the closer you get to France!
WHERE TO STAY
Where to stay in Zurich
Staying near Zürich HB (Main Station) puts you right in the heart of the city with unbeatable access to trains, trams, and buses—perfect for day trips and exploring Zürich. Plus, you're within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the charming Old Town, making it a super convenient and lively home base.
Budget: Hotel Montana Zürich (Highly rated breakfast available)
Mid-Range: Sorell Hotel Rütli (Breakfast included)
Luxury: Hotel Adler Zürich (Breakfast available)
Where to stay in Lucerne

Budget: Altstadt Hotel Krone Luzern (Breakfast available)
Mid-Range: Hotel Beau Séjour Lucerne (Breakfast available)
Luxury: Hotel Des Balances (Breakfast available)
Where to stay in Interlaken
In Interlaken, we LOVED staying in Unterseen, a historic town within the Interlaken municipality. We've also enjoyed staying in Matten Bei, which has a local feel compared to the center of Interlaken. From Unterseen, you'll walk 10 minutes to Interlaken West and about 25 minutes to Interlaken Ost. From Matten Bei, you'll walk about 20 minutes to Interlaken West and 15 minutes to Interlaken Ost.
Budget: Hotel Chalet Swiss (Breakfast included - Unterseen)
Budget: Balmers Hostel (Matten Bei)
Mid-Range: Adventure Guesthouse (Unterseen)
Luxury: Boutique Hotel Bellevue (Breakfast available - Unterseen, amazing location!)
Where to stay in Thun
You can stay just about anywhere in Thun and get the most out of your time there!
Mid-Range: Hotel Krone (Breakfast available)
Luxury: Hotel SeePark Thun (Breakfast available)
THE PERFECT 10-DAY ITINERARY
While this itinerary is for 10 days, it's possible to adjust it for a shorter or extended amount of time!
You'll fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH), which has the most international flight options, and has been voted the Best Airport in Europe many times.
If you can, arrive early so you can make the most out of your 10 days!
Day 1
You might fear jet lag, but trust the adrenaline and sleep you got on the plane to carry you through the day! We find that if you push through the first day and go to sleep on time/early, you'll wake up feeling refreshed and on the correct time zone schedule.
How to get into the city: Take the train from Zurich Airport to Zurich HB. You can purchase your tickets online, at the SBB ticket counter, OR use your Swiss Travel Pass (without needing to book a ticket). For the Swiss Travel Pass, you'll show your pass QR code to the person checking tickets on the train (this will work the same for most transport you take with the Swiss Travel Pass)!
The displays at the airport will show you which track the next train to the city will arrive on. There are around 177 trains per day, and the ride is about 11 minutes.

Once you arrive at Zurich HB, you can store your bags in the self-service luggage deposit! These lockers are in MOST stations in Switzerland. You can check which stations have lockers HERE!
You can use card or Apple Pay to pay for the luggage storage and can leave your belongings for up to 96 hours!
Now your day can FINALLY begin!
Schaffhausen & Rhine Falls

Take the train from Zurich HB to Schaffhausen, a small Swiss town near the German border. Walk through the old town, hit up a farmers market (if it's on), and grab a coffee from Kaffee Kollektiv before heading on your way to Rhine Falls.
You'll walk towards the Rhine River, where you'll have a 45-minute stroll to Rhine Falls (If you'd rather take the train, you can catch a quick, direct train to Rhine Falls).
Rhine Falls are the most powerful waterfalls in all of Europe!
Once you arrive, you can wander along the paths with views of the falls and the mighty rock in the center of it all, or take a boat ride to get up close to the natural wonders.
We recommend the boat ride because it forces you to feel how powerful these falls actually are. It's also a great way to cool off on a hot day with a nice mist!
If you don't want to take a boat ride, walk across the bridge to the southern bank of the falls! Pay 5 CHF to take the glass lift to the viewing platform to see the falls up close!
All trains and public transit for this activity are included in the Swiss Travel Pass!
Zürich Old Town & Lindenhof Viewpoint
Once you arrive back in Zurich, grab your bags from the lockers and head to your accommodation.
Then, head out to explore Zürich's Old Town!

Old Town Zürich (Altstadt) is the historic heart of the city, filled with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful medieval buildings, and charming shops and cafés. Highlights include Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches, the Lindenhof Hill for panoramic views, and Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most famous shopping streets. It’s a great place to wander, soak up the atmosphere, and learn about Zurich’s rich history.
Make sure to catch the sunset at Lindenhof Hill—a former Roman site turned beloved city hangout. It offers stunning views over the Limmat River and the rooftops of Zürich, making it a perfect spot to unwind and take it all in.
Two restaurants we recommend are:
Gertrudhof - AMAZING Cordon Bleu dishes
Fridas - Mexican Street Food
Day 2
Wake up bright and early and grab a coffee at COFFEE! This is an AMAZING local coffee shop where you can sit outside and enjoy the energy of city life as you sip on an espresso.
Lindt Chocolate Museum
Either drop your bags at Zürich HB or leave them at your hotel before heading to the Lindt Chocolate Museum!

Be sure to book your tickets well in advance—this is not only the most popular museum in Zürich, but one of the top attractions in all of Switzerland! Sometimes you're able to get day-of tickets upon arrival, but I wouldn't rely on that as an option.
You'll take a 13-minute direct train from Zurich HB to Kilchberg, which is where the Lindt Chocolate Museum is located!
Once off the train, you'll walk about 10 minutes to the museum! There will be signs pointing you in the correct direction.
The total commute time is about 25 minutes! And, the trains to and from the museum are included with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Lindt Home of Chocolate is a must-visit museum in Switzerland. It takes you through the history of the delicacy, the big names in chocolate, and the impact it's made on Swiss culture. You'll also learn how different types of Swiss chocolates are made - but the best part is all the FREE CHOCOLATE you'll get! Plan to leave with at least 10 different types of truffles in your pockets.
TRAIN: Zürich HB to Lucerne
Make your way back to Zürich HB, grab your bags, then hop on the direct, 40-minute train to Lucerne!
This train is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Explore Lucerne's Old Town
Drop your bags at your accommodation and head out to explore the Old Town. If you wish to do this on your own, don't miss Chapel Bridge, the Old Town Squares, Spreuer Bridge, and the Musegg Wall.
We recommend booking a walking tour so you can fully immerse yourself in the history of the city, get local recommendations, and hear stories that you wouldn't hear otherwise!
Finish up your evening splurging on fondue, a Swiss staple!
Fondue Recommendation: Stadtkeller
Day 3
Before heading out on any mountain excursion, always check the weather cam to see conditions at higher elevations. The last thing you want is to reach the top and find yourself completely fogged in with no views. For Mount Pilatus, you can check the weather cam HERE!
Mount Pilatus
In addition to learning all about Mt. Pilatus in this blog, you can check out our comprehensive video guide to exploring this legendary mountain below!
Mount Pilatus is one of the most iconic mountains in Switzerland! If you're visiting Lucerne, you have to explore it.
We recommend the Golden Round Trip Pass, which includes a guided bus tour to the cable car station, a cable car ride to Pilatus Kulm, a cogwheel train ride down the mountain, a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, and a lunch voucher!
If you'd rather explore Mount Pilatus on your own, you can take the cable car from Kriens Station up to Pilatus Kulm (purchase the round-trip ticket).
If you pick this option, take advantage of getting off at the Fräkmüntegg stop, where you can hike, experience the rope park, the Dragon Glider, and the Toboggan Run! All these activities are an extra cost, but we recommend checking them out (especially the toboggan run)!
Check out our video riding the toboggan - it's the longest in all of Switzerland!
After exploring Fräkmüntegg and Pilatus Kulm, take the cable car back down to Kriens.
Cable car tickets from Kriens are 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Mount Rigi (Alternative to Mount Pilatus)

Mt. Rigi is the other major alpine peak that's accessible from Lucerne. If you've already experienced Mt. Pilatus, or are looking for a cheaper option (we'll explain later), you should add this to your itinerary!
To access Mt. Rigi, you'll take a 40-minute, scenic boat ride to Weggis, then the cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad. From there, you can take the cogwheel train to the top of the mountain for amazing hikes, and on a clear day, you might be able to see Germany and France!
You'll find Rigi much less crowded than Pilatus and have access to far more hiking trails. It's worth walking through Weggis on the way back down and maybe watching sunset from the docks near the boat terminal.
The boat ride, cable car, and cogwheel train are all covered with the Swiss Travel Pass. This alone makes it worth purchasing!
If you don't have the Swiss Travel Pass,
Musegg Wall

The Musegg Wall was once part of Lucerne's fortification and is now a wonderful viewpoint! It was built in the 13th century and has 9 towers (some of which are open to the public) that are visible from the center of Lucerne.
We recommend taking the short hike up to the Männli Tower first! It's the second tower along the wall and the first one that's open to the public. To get to the top, you'll climb a few narrow stairs and emerge onto a platform that will give you a perspective of Lucerne you haven't seen before! It's a great place to watch sunset!
Paragliding
Instead of Musegg Wall, you can also go Paragliding! There's no experience like paragliding in Switzerland, especially over Lake Lucerne. You are guaranteed some of the best panoramic landscapes of Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi, along with the shimmering turquoise lake below.
Yes, I felt extremely safe doing this activity, and it's still one of my favorite things I've ever done!
Day 4
Start your day early - you'll want as much time as you can get in Stoos! We recommend having your bags packed and sandwiches made (with snacks) the night before, so you can wake up, get dressed, and pop right out the door!
Day Trip to Stoos
There are a few different ways to get from Lucerne to Stoos. We recommend using the SBB app to see which is available for the time you want to leave.
The most popular is the train from Lucerne to Schwyz, then the bus to Stoosbahn (the Muotathal direction). The bus will drop you directly in front of the Stoosbahn Station!

Hop on the Stoosbahnen Funicular, the steepest Funicular in the world, which will take you up to the car-free, mountain village of Stoos!
Even if you don't make it up to the popular Stoos Ridge Hike, the hiking in and around the mountain village of Stoos is well worth the trip! Grab a map at the visitors center and head on your way. Our favorite path started by turning right after the visitor center, walking to the playground, then following the path right!
Stoos Ridge Hike: You'll need to take an extra chairlift from Stoos up to the ridge of the mountain. The Stoos Ridge Hike is closed for most of the year due to weather, so check the website before you go! It's usually open between June and October.
You'll take the Klingenstock chairlift (35 CHF extra) up to the ridge, then hike to Fronalpstock. It's 2.5 miles (4.4km) of moderate effort, but you're promised some of the best panoramic scenery in Switzerland, including views of over 10 different lakes on a clear day!
The full trip to Stoos is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Sunset Walk on Luzerner Seepromenade

Any walk you take along Lake Lucerne will leave you in awe, but the walk along the Luzerner Seepromenade on the north side of the lake is out of this world.
If you cross the Seebrücke and turn right, you'll make your way toward this lakefront, flower-filled pathway, where you'll instantly feel the local vibe, see local musicians, and have a panoramic view of the Alps.
Our favorite walk on this promenade involved being serenaded by a harpist and relaxing on one of the benches along the lake to watch the sunset. If you walk down far enough, you'll find quiet places to swim in the lake!
For more on Lucerne and central Switzerland, check out our Top 10 Things to See & Do in Lucerne Blog, or watch the video below for the same information in video format!
Day 5
Upon waking up, enjoy a coffee from SiP café before heading to Interlaken!
TRAIN: Luzern - Interlaken Express
The 1-hour and 50-minute Panoramic train from Lucerne to Interlaken is one of the BEST in all of Switzerland. It provides the best views, and it's included in the Swiss Travel Pass (no seat reservations required)! If you can, grab a seat on the right side of the train—but honestly, the views are incredible on both sides, so you can’t go wrong!
This scenic train is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Explore Interlaken & Lake Brienz

Drop your bags and head out to explore Interlaken! We recommend heading towards Lake Brienz, one of the two lakes surrounding Interlaken. We love strolling along the lakeside path or renting bikes to explore the perimeter!
Though our host had bikes we could use, we've heard a lot of amazing things about Yello Velo, which is a bike rental shop in Interlaken. They have all types of bikes to rent, from e-bikes to road bikes!
You'll be amazed by the turquoise blue water and how clear and clean it is! If the weather permits, go for a swim!
Sunset Paragliding

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you NEED to do! Going paragliding was a last-minute decision we made, and we're so happy we did! We left for this 1.5-hour experience from the middle of Interlaken and felt extremely safe the whole time, due to our knowledgeable guides.
From the second you take off, you'll be overwhelmed by the beauty of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains as well as the glorious lakes shimmering below.
After a 10-20 minute flight, you'll land softly back to earth, arriving in the large meadow park in the center of Interlaken!
You'll be able to purchase photos from your pilot for an extra charge. They are so worth it for the memories!
Learn all about paragliding AND skydiving in Interlaken by watching me do both in the video below!
DAY 6
Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe & Grindelwald
Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe is the most popular tourist attraction in all of Switzerland! While it's expensive, it's a full-day event that allows you to experience different cable cars and mountain trains while witnessing a huge variety of Swiss landscapes along the way.
What the journey looks like:
Take the train 30 minutes from Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal
Follow the signs for Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe
Present your tickets and take the Eiger Express tri-cable gondola
Transfer to Jungfrau Railway
All the transfers are organized with people available to help if you have any questions!
When you arrive at the Jungfraujoch railway station (which is the highest rail station in Europe at 3,454 meters), you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, along with the snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps and the crisp, fresh air.
At the top of Jungfraujoch, you'll have access to multiple viewing platforms, including the Sphinx Observatory and the panoramic viewing platform. You'll walk through the Ice Palace, experience different multimedia rooms, and shop at the highest Lindt store in the world! You have to get the Lindt Dubai Chocolate if they still have it!
You'll spend between 3-4 hours at the summit before taking the mountain train back down to Grindelwald. On your ride down, you'll get a complimentary Lindt chocolate to commemorate your trip!
Trains from Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal Station are covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
You'll get 25% off Jungfraujoch with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Grindelwald

Once you're finished exploring Jungfraujoch, take the train from Grindelwald Terminal station to Grindelwald!
You won't want to miss this stunning mountain village that's lined with shops, restaurants, and some of the best views!
You can have coffee or dinner here to end your day before taking the direct train back to Interlaken!
Dinner: Restaurant Adlerstube for amazing fondue and other Swiss specialties!
Grindelwald First (Alternative to Jungfraujoch)
From Interlaken, you'll take a 30-minute train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, walk about 10 minutes through the village, then take the cable car up to Grindelwald First - Top of Adventure.

Once you reach Grindelwald First you have the option to walk on the First Cliff Walk, take in the views from the First View viewing platform, or experience the First Flyer or First Glider, which will take you soaring over the mountain landscape. You can also have lunch at Berggasthaus First, which has one of the best outdoor seating areas we've ever seen!
In the summer months, you can also hike to Bachalpsee Lake! This hike is a moderate 3.7-mile, out-and-back trail with a wide dirt path, making it accessible and doable for families with kids. The hike has a 636-foot elevation gain from Grindelwald First, which sits at 2,168 meters above sea level.
The trains from Interlaken to Grindelwald are covered with the Swiss Travel Pass, and you'll receive a 50% discount on the Grindelwald First cable car with the pass!
Day 7
Skydiving

This will be the most exciting day of your trip, if you book Skydiving! I spontaneously booked my first skydiving experience back in 2019 (before even booking my flight to Switzerland), and it's the best decision I've ever made!
Switzerland is said to be one of the most beautiful places in the WORLD to jump! I haven't jumped anywhere else, but I can say that skydiving in Interlaken took my breath away. It's my favorite experience I've ever had - EVER!
This experience was about 5 hours and included pick-up, a safety briefing lesson, a scenic plane ride over the Alps, and the main event: a 45-second free fall, followed by a 5-7 minute canopy float down to earth. The jump itself is done tandem, with a professional who has their skydiving license. You will be dropped back in Interlaken at the end of your experience!
You can pay extra for photos and videos! Yes, it can all be expensive, but it's so worth it!
The most common question I get asked is "did you feel safe?"
I felt SO safe!
There's a huge adrenaline build-up leading up to the jump, but once you're with your instructor, they'll make sure you know EXACTLY what to do and will make you feel extremely safe and ready!
Make sure to book this experience in advance, as spaces fill up quickly!
Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a small Swiss village set in a valley between Interlaken and the Jungfrau massif. When you step off the train, you'll be in awe of the sheer size of the cliffs and over 75 waterfalls.
Lauterbrunnen is a 30-minute direct train from Interlaken Ost and runs about every 30 minutes!
Our favorite thing to do in Lauterbrunnen is to simply walk through the valley, taking in the surrounding views. The Lauterbrunnen Valley Path is well marked and will guide you towards the main sites like Staubbach Falls and Trümmelbach Falls!
You won't want to miss Trümmelbach Falls (16 CHF), which are the only glacier waterfalls in Europe that are inside a mountain and open to the public! Yes, they will be busy and you will get wet, but you'll be blown away by the force of the water running down from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks!
The trains from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen are covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Spatz-Espresso and Wine Bar

Enjoy your last night in Interlaken at Spatz-Espresso and Wine Bar!
This cafe is located in Unterseen, a small town in the Interlaken district. You can walk here from the center of Interlaken - and you won't want to leave!
This is the best place to watch the sunset over the river, while taking in the mesmerizing Swiss flower boxes and watching the paragliders in the distance.
Day 8
At this point in your trip, you might be feeling exhausted from all the different activities, hikes, and adventures. Day 8 is filled with relaxing recommendations that you won't want to miss!
Boat Ride to Thun

Taking a boat ride on Lake Thun is one of the most magical things you can do in Interlaken. You can catch the BLS-Schiff from the Interlaken West Ferry Terminal and relax onboard as the boat glides through the turquoise blue waters of Lake Thun. There are multiple stops where you can disembark or you can stay on the ship with a snack or a glass of wine in hand.

Take the ferry to Thun, which is a small lakeside town with medieval architecture, a lively Old Town, and a castle with some of the best views. Thun is our favorite town in the Bernese Oberland Region because it's less touristy and feels like a true hidden gem! If you make your way to the covered, wooden bridge in town, you might even see locals surfing on the Aare River!
The boat ride on lake Thun is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Thun Castle & Thun Old Town

Drop your bags at your accommodation and head out to explore Thun. You will fall in love the moment you wander through the medieval streets. You'll find Thun far less touristic than most of the other Swiss towns.
Don't miss - The wooden bridges on the Aare River (where you'll catch locals surfing!), shopping on Obere Hauptgasse, Mühleplatz Square, and the Kirchtreppe hidden staircase to Thun Castle!
Explore Thun Castle for a few hours (entrance included with Swiss Travel Pass), have lunch at the cafe, and spend the evening walking around the grounds of the castle, which you can access for free. We spend hours sitting on one of the benches, gazing over Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains!
Dinner Recommendations:
Cretan Garden - Authentic Greek Food
Parada 30 - Mexican Food
For more on Interlaken and the surrounding Jungfrau region, check out our Top 10 Things to See & Do in Interlaken Blog, or watch the video below for the same information in video format!
Day 9
Wake up early and take a few more hours exploring the streets of Thun. Maybe you wake up early enough for the sunset over Lake Thun!
Schwäbis River Pool
The Schwäbis River Pool in Thun has been a beloved summer spot since 1884, offering a family-friendly place to swim in the River Aare. If you're not up for a dip, you can relax at the riverside restaurant or unwind in a deckchair and soak up the sun along the water's edge.
TRAIN: Thun to Bern
Grab your bags and hop on a 30-minute train from Thun to Bern!

Bern, the charming capital of Switzerland, is known for its medieval old town, where cobblestone streets wind past sandstone buildings, historic towers, and the iconic Zytglogge clock.
Store your bags in the train station's self-service luggage deposit and head out to enjoy the town.
The train from Thun to Bern is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass!
Bern: Activity Options
We recommend touring the Zytglogge Clock Tower, taking a guided walking tour of the city, or grabbing lunch at Volver BarTapasCafé!
TRAIN: Bern to Zürich
Pick up your bags and hop on the hour-long train from Bern to Zürich HB (covered with the Swiss Travel Pass).
Once you arrive, check into your airport hotel and have one last dinner before taking your flight out the next day!
Day 10
Depending on the time of you're flight, you can either run out for a coffee and breakfast or head straight to the airport.
Zurich: Activities
If you have an evening flight, here are a few more activities we recommend doing in Zürich!
We hope this 10-day Switzerland itinerary helps you plan the trip of a lifetime! Whether you follow it to the letter, or use it as a starting point, it’s packed with ideas to inspire your own unforgettable adventure!
